After
exploring the lakes and heritage hotels in Udaipur, Rajatsthan, its apt to
extend the tour programme to Kumbhalgarh. A two hours drive from the 'City
of Lakes' will offer you the great glimpse of Kumbhalgarh Fort. It was
constructed in 15th century AD during the reign of Maharana Kumbha( 1419- 63
AD) and fortifies the 2nd largest Wall after the Great Wall of China. This
defensive fortification is situated on 3,500 feet above the sea level and
tourist in order to reach here, can enjoy a number of twist and turn round
the Aravali mountain ranges.
Fort Architecture
Kumbhalgarh Fort highlights the glorious past of the Mauryan Empire. It is
known for the best architectural wonders of the 84 forts erected during the
Mewar Kingdom. It is built with the world's 2nd longest wall, that measures
about 37 kms. The entire fort complex houses three beautiful palaces, 360
temples, gardens, gates and 700 cannon bunkers. In the 19th century, the
fort was renovated by Maharaja Fateh Singh. A walk in and around this
historic structure will offer more about the past ruling powers.
Tourist Attractions
Aret Pol:
Derived from a nearby village Aret, it is the first gate of Kumbhalgarh
Fort. This challenging structure was equipped to transfer mirror signals to
all other gates in times of emergency.
Kartargarh:
It is a magnificent fort, constructed inside the Kumbhalgarh Fort. A
remnants of an old palace inside the inner fort still attracts keen
observers. The 365 temples, including a massive Shivlinga(devoted to Lord
Shiva) are must-visit centers.
Hanuman Pol:
With beholding the holy abode of Hanuman(ardent devotee of Lord Rama),
Hanuman Pol is the third gate. On visiting the shrine, tourist will find an
image, which was brought by Maharana Kumbha from Mandore in Marwar.
Badal Mahal:
Constructed inside the Kumbhalgarh Fort, it is considered as the highest of
all structures. The majestic Palace was built of huge apartments, painted
with pastel-colored murals. Interestingly, the Mahal offers an unforgettable
bird's eye view of the in and outside the fort.
Other note of attractions in Kumbhalgarh Fort are Fateh Prakesh Palace, Ram
Pol, Paghra Pol, Topkhana Pol, Bhairava Pol, Vijay Stambha, Hulla Pol and
Nimboo Pol.
